Back in the studio

I've been creating art since I was a child. So painting and creating have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

This blog is a way to journal my thoughts and hopefully, at the same time, give you an insight into my practice, ideas and processes.

A Change of Pace

One of the positives of the lockdown was slowing down and reflecting on my practice.

As an artist, it's important to have a routine, or we risk getting too caught up in ideas rather than practice. However, we also risk putting too much pressure on ourselves as creatives - am I creating enough? Is this work valid?

Here is where I've found having an art studio over the past few years invaluable - somewhere to visit daily to focus on painting. However, during the lockdown, with the studio out of bounds, I had to re-focus my routine to ensure I set out time each day to dedicate to creating, even at home.

After a few weeks at home, I began to settle into a new way of things - the 'Habitat' exhibition resulted from working from home, and I'm so happy I got to create those projects and share them with you.

So yeah, it's a few weeks since transitioning back to the studio, and there are many changes to adapt to, but I'm looking forward to it!

A Home Away from Home

The refresher of being back in the studio and having a workspace separate from home feels like a new lease on life. I've been experimenting with larger-scale works and new painting techniques. As happy as I am with the work created at home, it's confirmed for me the benefits of having a studio to work in.

Alana Barton

Alana is a figurative painter based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The paintings explore childhood, family relationships, and the speculative relationship between real and imaginary.

Mostly based on young people integrated with organic forms, the paintings are inspired by feelings of nostalgia and Renaissance paintings.

The artwork uses both figurative and abstract elements and explores movement and colour to convey surreal dream-like states and alternative realities.
